About our extensions
What makes Russian hair different from other extension hair?
Russian hair is widely considered the finest extension hair in the world. It is naturally silky, soft and luminous — with a texture and movement that blends seamlessly with most hair types. Unlike heavily processed alternatives, authentic Russian hair is cuticle-intact and minimally processed, which means less tangling, less shedding, and a far more natural result. It can also be styled, coloured and treated just like your own hair.
How long do keratin bond extensions last?
With proper care, our Russian keratin bonds typically last 3–4 months before needing a maintenance appointment. The hair itself — if well cared for — can be rebonded multiple times, meaning you can get years of wear from a single investment. This is one of the biggest advantages of authentic Russian hair over lower-quality alternatives.
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
When installed correctly by a trained professional and maintained properly, keratin bond extensions cause minimal damage to natural hair. The key is working with a qualified stylist who understands proper placement, bond sizing and removal techniques. Our education programs specifically cover scalp health and hair integrity — because protecting your client's natural hair is always the priority.
What extension methods do you offer?
We stock and specialise in a full range of Russian hair extension methods — Keratin Bonds (our signature method), Machine Weft (including Genius Weft and Flat Machine Weft), I-Tip, Tape Extensions, and Clip-Ins. We also stock Wigs and hairpieces. Each method suits different hair types, lifestyles and budgets — we recommend booking a consultation or virtual colour match to find the right fit for you.
How do I know which shade is right for me?
We offer a free virtual colour match service — simply book online and our team will help you identify the perfect shade or blend from our range of 23 colours. We also have a Hair Plug Colour Ring available for in-salon consultations. Getting the shade right the first time is essential, and we take it seriously. Book your free colour match here.
Can I colour or bleach the extensions?
Yes — authentic Russian hair responds to colour treatments just like natural hair. You can tone, tint and in some cases lighten our extensions. However, we always recommend having any colour work done by a professional, and we strongly advise against box dye or at-home bleaching. Excessive chemical processing will shorten the lifespan of the hair. Always do a strand test first.
Aftercare & maintenance
How do I wash my keratin bond extensions?
Always use a sulphate-free, extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair in a downward motion — never scrub or circular movements at the root. Avoid applying conditioner directly to the bonds. After washing, gently squeeze (don't rub) the hair dry with a towel and allow to dry naturally or use a low heat setting. We stock a range of extension-safe haircare products in our online store.
How often should I brush my extensions?
Brush your extensions at least twice daily using a soft-bristle or loop brush specifically designed for extensions. Always start from the ends and work upward to the roots to prevent tangling and bond stress. Never brush wet extensions — always wait until they are completely dry, or use a wide-tooth comb gently when wet.
Can I swim or exercise with extensions?
Yes, but with care. For swimming — especially in chlorinated or salt water — we recommend wearing your hair in a loose braid or bun and rinsing immediately after. Always wash and dry thoroughly after swimming. For exercise, tie your hair back loosely to minimise friction on the bonds. Excessive sweat at the root can weaken bonds over time, so regular maintenance appointments are important if you're very active.
What is Rebond & Rebuild™ and do I need it?
Rebond & Rebuild™ is our signature service that gives your existing extensions a second (or third!) life. Rather than replacing the hair entirely, we carefully remove your bonds, clean and condition the hair, and reapply fresh keratin bonds. It's more sustainable, more cost-effective, and gentler on your natural hair. If your hair is in good condition after 3–4 months, rebonding is almost always the best option. Book a rebond appointment here.
What products should I avoid?
Avoid any products containing sulphates, alcohol, or heavy oils near the bonds — these can break down the keratin and cause premature slippage. Avoid applying dry shampoo directly to the bond area. Avoid heavy conditioning masks or oil treatments at the root. We recommend sticking to our extension-safe haircare range for the best results and longest lifespan from your hair.
Wholesale & trade
Do I need an ABN to access wholesale pricing?
Yes — our wholesale programme is exclusively for registered Australian businesses with an active ABN. If you're based in New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, please contact us directly at info@thehairplugsydney.com to discuss international trade access.
How long does trade account approval take?
We review and activate all wholesale applications within 24 hours on business days. Once approved, you'll receive an email confirmation with your trade account login, wholesale pricing details, and a first-order discount code.
Is there a minimum order quantity for wholesale?
There is no strict minimum order quantity for Stockist accounts. Trade Partners and Preferred Suppliers have order volume guidelines which are discussed at the time of approval. We've kept this flexible to suit salons of all sizes — from independent stylists to high-volume salons.
What is the Trade Sample Pack?
The Trade Sample Pack lets you experience every extension method in our range before committing to wholesale stock. It includes samples of Keratin Bonds, Tape Extensions, I-Tips, Genius Weft and Flat Machine Weft, plus a first-order discount code and our full product catalogue. It's available exclusively to professionals with an active ABN.
Do you offer support to trade partners?
Absolutely. Trade partners get direct access to Felicia and the team for colour matching advice, technique questions and product support. We're not a call centre — you deal with the people who actually know the product. Trade Partners and Preferred Suppliers also receive priority access to our education programs at partner rates.
Education programs
Do I need prior experience to attend a course?
No prior experience is required for our Master The Art Of Keratin Bonds™ or Look & Learn Night programs — both are designed for all skill levels. Rebond & Rebuild™ is best suited to stylists with some foundation in extension application. If you're unsure which program is right for you, contact us and we'll advise based on your current experience level.
What do I need to bring to the course?
For the full-day and half-day programs, bring a willing model (or we can help source one), comfortable clothes, and a notebook. All hair, tools and materials are supplied by The Hair Plug Sydney — you don't need to purchase anything in advance. For the Look & Learn Night, just bring yourself.
How many students are in each class?
We intentionally keep groups very small — a maximum of 6 participants per program. This ensures every student gets real hands-on time with Felicia and personalised feedback. You won't spend the day watching from the back of a room — you'll be doing the work.
Do I get a certificate after completing the course?
Yes — all graduates of our full-day and half-day programs receive a Hair Plug Sydney Certificate of Completion. This signals to clients and employers that you've trained with Australia's most trusted Russian hair specialist. Graduates with an active ABN are also immediately eligible to apply for a wholesale trade account.
What is the Russian Hair Collectors Club?
The Russian Hair Collectors Club is an exclusive ongoing community for Hair Plug trained stylists. Members receive ongoing education content, early access to new products, priority spots at future events, and direct access to Felicia and the team. Details are shared upon course completion.
